A power line had come loose from a pole on Mills Street in Orlando, and was left hanging across the entire width of the sidewalk at chest/neck level. This posed a significant pedestrian safety risk of both possible electrocution and strangulation. Fortunately Enviro Hero noticed this hazard just in time to prevent himself from being strangled and thrown off his bike by it. Realizing that immediate action was required, Enviro Hero quickly strapped the power line back onto the pole with zip ties so it can no longer claim pedestrian victims. There was no ladder on hand at the time so the cord couldn’t be completely tucked out of the way, but it should hold for now until a better repair job can be done.

I’ve been busy working away on a new website for Team Justice, and now it’s ready so check it out: www.team-justice.org. I’m hoping this new site will help us expand our superhero efforts.

The city of Winter Park has announced that they are expanding current recycling services to include businesses and apartment complexes, both of which previously didn’t have any recycling at all (unless the business paid for a service, but there’s no incentive for businesses to spend the extra money so most of them don’t). Businesses are responsible for the majority of paper products that are thrown in the garbage instead of being recycled, so it’s great to see this change. The recycling program will be rolled out over the next few months.

As mentioned by local superhero Master Legend during a radio interview on Wednesday, I have been welcomed as the newest member of the Florida-based superhero team, Team Justice. As a team we will be doing various missions, including environmental protection, rescuing animals, and helping people in need. Thank you Team Justice, for having me as part of the team!

Yesterday I made my costumed debut at Central Florida Earth Day and was well received. As expected, wearing a mask and cape gets a lot of attention. Everyone stopped to ask who I was and what I was about. My response: “I’m Enviro Hero, and I’m here to save the planet!” - then they asked me to pose for a photo! So many photos (will be posted soon). I’m thankful to all the wonderful people I met for accepting this new superhero and for everything they are doing for the environment. I hope to continue working together with everyone in protecting our planet.

Earlier today, a young boy was inches away from falling off a bridge into a ravine when one of the training wheels on his bike came loose. Fortunately, Enviro Hero was close by and jumped into action. He guided the boy safely to the other side of the bridge where his father was waiting. Using his trusty adjustable wrench, Enviro Hero fixed the training wheel and the little cyclist was safely on his way!

What is it that makes a superhero super? Is it special powers? Nope. Fancy gadgets? Nope. Everyone knows it’s the spandex tights. And I’m no exception to the rule. You can see in the picture here that I’m busy working away on making my costume, trying to get it ready for Central Florida Earth Day this weekend (my first public appearance). I found a great deal on a sewing machine at a thrift store and it’s working quite nicely. You’ll see plenty of photos all over the website once I’m suited up!

This beautiful bicycle was abandoned by it’s owner when they purchased a new bike. After days of neglect, Enviro Hero found out about the bike and swooped in for the rescue. It was in rough shape, but after some fixing up it’s now in excellent working condition. The bike has been donated to a pedestrian in need, and was accepted with great gratitude!

This is the handiest little gadget that I’ve ever found for my bike. It’s a flash light that doesn’t need batteries… and not only that, it charges with solar power and has a wind up crank. It also has a clever little power meter that tells you how many minutes the light will last on the current charge. For each day it’s placed in direct sunlight you’ll get an additional 15-30 minutes of flash light use, and if that’s not enough just turn the crank to charge it more! The maximum charge is 1 hour and 30 minutes on full brightness, or 3 hours in blinking mode.
The only downfall is it doesn’t come with a bicycle attachment, but I was able to solve this easily enough by using adhesive-backed velcro. The light isn’t super bright, but it definitely comes in useful when biking at night in areas where street lights aren’t sufficient. For safety, you should always use a light when biking at night (in some areas, it’s the law), and this solar powered light is a great choice for us environmentalists. Not only that, it’s on sale right now at Target for only $11. Great deal! It’s called the MegaBrite SolarMax Deluxe, find it in the flash light isle (usually close to the bicycle section).

If you though Earth Day only happens one day a year, you’re in for a big surprise! While I like to think every day is Earth Day, the actual celebrations happen as far as 2 weeks from the official date of April 22nd. One such event is Central Florida Earth Day, which happens on May 2nd at Lake Eola Park in Orlando. It sounds like it’ll be a great event, featuring live music, vegetarian food, and hundreds of eco-friendly vendors. I’ll be there too, so if you see someone in red tights and a yellow cape, please come by and say hi! For more information about the event, check out the website www.cfearthday.org!
